Kampala, Uganda — Ugandan musician Eddie Kenzo has sparked debate within the local music industry following remarks perceived as dismissive toward Kadongo Kamu artists.
In a recent discussion, Kenzo reportedly suggested that some Kadongo Kamu musicians have spent many years in the industry without achieving the same level of success as younger, contemporary artists. His comments quickly drew attention online, with critics accusing him of undermining the contributions of veteran performers in the traditional genre.
Kadongo Kamu, one of Uganda’s oldest music styles, is known for its storytelling and cultural significance. Many fans and industry players argue that success in the genre cannot be measured solely by modern standards such as digital streams, international awards, or social media influence.
While some supporters of Kenzo interpreted his remarks as a call for evolution and adaptation within the industry, others viewed them as disrespectful to artists who laid the foundation for Uganda’s music scene.
Several Kadongo Kamu fans took to social media to defend the genre, emphasizing its role in preserving cultural heritage and educating communities through music.
By press time, Eddie Kenzo had not issued an official statement addressing the backlash. However, the incident has reignited conversations about generational differences, recognition, and what truly defines success in Uganda’s music industry.
